Peter Cox

Of course, Peter Cox is best known for his work with Go West alongside Richard Drummie. I actually have a connect to Peter from 1985 with their track ‘CALL ME’ (but that is story for another time). I have been a fan of Peter’s voice ever since their debut album in 1985. Incredible tone, range and so highly distinctive.

When I was writing Dance the Rain, apart from the lead vocal, I had an idea to create some really close and tight harmony backing vocals and as it turned out, was the last thing to actually make it on the track. Dance the Rain was recorded over several years and having put together such an incredible lineup of artists for this track, backing vocal was proving to be a real test. Along with my ever bulging ‘want’s list’ of musicians and artists which had about 6-8 people for each instrument, the backing vocal for this track had just two names - Peter Cox & Michael McDonald. Michael had obviously been considered because of his incredible work with Steely Dan and having listened to Peter’s backing vocals on ‘Little Caeser’ from the Go West album ‘Dancing on the Couch’, it was always going to be between them. The decision was made after Peter-John Vettese, who had produced a solo album for Peter Cox, had confirmed that Cox could easily nail the backing vocals, which was exactly what happened.

We spent the day with Cox at a studio in Bermondsey and he was brilliant. This was really stretching the boundaries in respect of the work that Cox was used to and he totally thrived on the challenge. A consummate professional, willing to experiment and challenge and get it right. What was so amazing to see was his recognition of how he was so considerate of the lead vocal by Jon Kenzie and how he intertwined his stunning unique interpretation for the backing vocals in with Jon’s expression and more importantly, Peter’s real attention to the lyrics, bringing a life of it’s own to each word and phrase.

We then got Peter in again to work with Vettese at Sphere Studios and the backing vocal was nailed. It was great to see the two Peters working together again.
